Tolerance Lesson Activities

Use the packet provided to think about the word tolerance:

1-3:  Write your own thoughts
4-7:  View the following links, then answer the questions.

8-11:  Read E.M. Forster's speech "Tolerance" in our literature book on pp. 679-681.  Answer these questions using the text of the speech.

Complete the following project and be ready to present it for a grade:

#1:  Choose the statement that is closest to your opinion:
  • A.  I fully support the Coca-cola advertisement.
  • B.  I support the idea of tolerance in America, but I don't agree with the way the Coca-cola advertisement portrays it.
  • C.  I do not support the Coca-cola advertisement or think that tolerance of diversity is important.

#2:  Create a mini-poster that states, supports, and explains your opinion.  It must include:

  • The opinion you chose (see #1)
  • A brief summary of the advertisement (It is title "America is Beautiful")
  • 5 quotes or paraphrases supporting your views (from 5 DIFFERENT cited credible sources)
  • 5 explanations (one for each quote) regarding how each quote supports your opinion
